The Emanuel Synagogue

The Emanuel Synagogue models the future of congregational Judaism, in that it offers, in addition to diverse prayer services and myriad learning experiences, a variety of programs to attract people of all ages and backgrounds to build an interconnected and religiously directed community.

We see the future of Judaism beyond the world of denominations, where we share the pursuit of justice and, where each learns from the other and we all learn from our God and our tradition.

Our synagogue is a place in which we discover meaning within the complexity of life and the mystery of God. Each of us has our own personal journey of spiritual exploration and growth; that journey is enhanced in the welcoming company of like-minded, warm-hearted souls.

Emanuel Synagogue honoured Rabbi Jeffrey Kamins for 20 years of loving, dedicated service to the Sydney community with a surprise celebration on Saturday night.

Over 500 members and friends came to show their support as the Simchat Torah service turned into a “This is your life” style event. Hosted by Larry Emdur, the range of guests gave an indication of the breadth of inspiring work the Rabbi does for our community. Families from Villawood Detention Centre spoke with deep affection of Rabbi Kamins as someone who has supported them through the hardest times in their lives with nothing but warmth and openness. Children from Emanuel Preschool spoke of their “cool and awesome” rabbi. The highlight of the night was the surprise guests flown in under the cover of secrecy from Los Angeles. Rabbi Kamins’ sister Loni arrived as the first surprise guest of the night, and sat with an amazed Rabbi throughout the event and just when it seemed it couldn’t get any more emotional or surprising there was one final guest – Rabbi Kamins’ mother Lorraine. The joy was contagious as mother and son embraced to a standing ovation and a crowd exuding heartfelt warmth and support.

Celebrations continued into the night with the rest of the Simchat Torah service and a true party atmosphere as people embraced the tone of the evening with energetic dancing and high spirited singing.

Sukkot in Luna Park

October 7, 2009 by

Ten Chabad houses joined for a Family Fun Day in honor of Sukkos at the Luna Amusement Park in Sydney, Australia.

In Sydney it had been raining for days! Everyone was sure that it would be a total writeoff and big monetary loss! Even that very morning it was raining! And lo and behold, a quick Pa”n and as the place opened at 11:00 the sun came out, crowds of freye yidden swarmed to the event, ate kosher  gourmet food in the sukkah, many emotionally bentched Lulav and esrog with Shehechiyonu for the first time this year (and some for the first time in their life) had fun and proudly identifeid as Jews! what a Kiddush Hashem! Yishar Koach to Reb Elimelech Levy, Tzach director of Sydney Australia, for this enourmous kiddush Hashem!
