Changes to Claims Conference eligibility guidelines will allow Sydney’s JewishCare to substantially increase the number of home support packages that enables Survivors to remain living in their own homes.
The increase from 170 – 210 home support packages that JewishCare will provide resulted from the decision by the Claim Conference in New York to
- broaden the definition of geographic areas in WW II impacted by the advancing German army
- increase the allowable income of applicants
Another factor was the revenue the Claims Conference received by way of a grant from the Hungarian Government.

These home support packages provide help with showering and dressing, light housework, shopping, meal preparation laundry, transport to appointments etc. These tasks tend to become more and more difficult as people age and help with them often allows people to remain livening in their own homes rather than having to go into residential care.
Claire Vernon CEO JewishCare said “ This decision is good news for many Survivors who were previously ineligible and these people can now immediately, with no waiting list receive the support they need to remain at home” .
JewishCare Home Support employs over 40 qualified Field Workers and a team of 10 case managers, many of whom are bilingual including Russian speaking.
This increase means JewishCare remains the largest provider of in-home support in the Jewish community as the total program includes Federal Government and community funding in addition to the Claims Conference Funding.
