SHIR to perform at ‘Australia Day Live’ in historic first for Jewish music
SHIR will take to the stage at ‘Australia Day Live’ this Monday night on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House, marking a first for the national event and a moment of deep significance for the Jewish community.
It is believed to be the first time an openly Jewish band will perform at ‘Australia Day Live’, coming just weeks after the antisemitic terror attack at Bondi.

SHIR is part of the broader SHIR Australian Jewish Music Festival, a revived cultural event that celebrates Jewish music in Australia and brings artists together from different styles and backgrounds. The word shir means “song” in Hebrew, and the festival has been building a reputation for performances that reflect both community and artistic variety. SHIR performed a widely shared rendition of “I Am Australian” at the Bondi vigil following the attack.
Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said that there is “an opportunity to focus on what unites us rather than what divides us; a shared belief in freedom, respect and a fair go”, adding that “throughout the day, Sydney Harbour will come alive with activities that celebrate the Australian spirit, showcase our vibrant multicultural communities, honour our First Nations history, and provide moments of reflection as we stand with those affected by the vile antisemitic Bondi terror attack”.
The concert will also feature a lineup of well-known Australian performers, including Cody Simpson, Kate Ceberano, as well as The Fabulous Caprettos, made up of Wendy Matthews, Rai Thistlethwaite, Dave Gleeson and Joe Camilleri.
The concert runs from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and will be broadcast live on ABC TV and ABC iview.
