Seligman recognised for two decades of leadership at Sydney Jewish Museum
At the Sydney Jewish Museum’s 2025 AGM held yesterday, 23 November, former CEO Norman Seligman was honoured as the inaugural recipient of a new award that now carries his name, the Norman Seligman Culture and Community Award.

The museum announced that the annual award will include a perpetual statuette to be displayed on site. Norman was warmly recognised for his remarkable contribution to the museum since 2002, along with his broader commitment to Jewish life in Sydney and beyond. His leadership was described as central to strengthening the museum and deepening its impact on the broader community.
Museum President Greg Shand formally announced the award and Board member Roz Levin presented Norman with a personal commemorative medallion, which drew strong applause.
“This award recognises extraordinary leadership and dedication but also celebrates the beginning of a lasting legacy for our museum and our community,” Shand said.
“For more than twenty years, Norman served as the CEO of the Sydney Jewish Museum, guiding it with wisdom and determination. Under his leadership, the museum has grown into the thriving, world-class cultural and educational centre we know today, with over 200 trained guides and more than 25,000 visitors coming through its doors annually.”
Shand added that Norman’s “sharp practical judgement ensured the Museum would become financially sustainable so that its important educational and inspirational work could continue, secure into the future.” With redevelopment now underway, he said it was fitting that Norman’s “tireless work ethic” will be recognised in future recipients as the museum builds a new Centre for Contemporary Jewish Life, History and Culture.
