The troops were on foot patrol shortly after 10 p.m. when they were struck by an explosive device planted along a central route in the area. The unit then came under gunfire during efforts to evacuate the casualties.

The fallen soldiers were identified as Staff Sgt. Meir Shimon Amar, 20, Sgt. Moshe Nissim Frech, 20, and Staff Sgt. Noam Aharon Musgadian, 20, all members of the Netzah Yehuda Battalion of the Kfir Brigade. Also killed was Sgt. First Class (res.) Benyamin Asulin, 28, of the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade.

The fifth soldier was subsequently identified as First Sgt. Moshe Shmuel Noll, 21, also of the Netzah Yehuda Battalion.

Two of the wounded soldiers are in serious condition, with the rest sustaining moderate or light injuries. The incident raises the number of Israeli military casualties in the war to 888.

The explosion occurred during a joint operation by the Netzah Yehuda Battalion and the 646th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade, under the command of the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade. The forces were tasked with clearing Beit Hanoun of remaining terrorist operatives near Israel’s border with the Gaza Strip. The IDF said the area had been targeted in recent aerial strikes to prepare for the maneuver but acknowledged that questions remain.

A preliminary IDF investigation suggests the unit was moving along a central axis in Beit Hanoun on foot when they triggered the explosive.

At least 1,180 people were killed, and 252 Israelis and foreigners were taken hostage in Hamas’s attacks on Israeli communities near the Gaza border on October 7. Of the 50 remaining hostages, around 30 are believed to be dead.
