As Australia’s Jewish community gathers to recall the story of the Book of Esther, I hope you feel uplifted by its message of joy, generosity and kindness, and the enduring power of the human spirit.

Purim reminds us to show courage and resilience – to rise to the challenges we face and uphold freedom, unity, and tolerance. These ideals are essential to the rich tapestry of our national life. To love and respect one another is a commitment that binds us together as a society and reminds us of our common humanity.

The message of Purim – that hate is fought by pride and joy – holds even greater power now as our nation continues to grapple with the consequences of the antisemitic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach. In order to be the light that triumphs over darkness, we must confront and defeat antisemitism by holding true to the best of our national character.

When we stand together with courage and kindness, we weaken those who – like history’s cruellest echoes – seek to hurt and divide us. Only together do we have our best chance of preventing the horrors of the past from occurring again.

Now, with the escalation of the conflict with Iran, I know that as you gather with the community, you will be hoping and praying for peace.

This Purim, I honour the unbreakable spirit of Jewish people in Australia and around the world, a spirit strengthened by your commitment to tradition, community and faith. I thank you for your contributions to our multicultural, multi-faith society. I thank you for your hard work, aspiration and love of country. And I thank you for the acts of courage, care, and generosity – the mitzvahs – that are your greatest gift to this nation.

To each of you, I wish a wonderful celebration – Chag Purim Sameach!
