The award, a joint initiative with the Jewish National Fund-USA, marks Schimmel as a leading voice among Zionist trailblazers under 45. Now in its third year, the program spotlights those moving the needle for Jewish communities globally during an era of unprecedented upheaval.

Chronicling the Unthinkable

Schimmel’s lens has become a vital witness to the fallout of October 7. Eschewing mere headlines for the raw human toll, her portfolio tracks the harrowing journeys of hostage families, displaced residents, and wounded soldiers.

Her unflinching eye earned her the 2024 Local Testimony Photograph of the Year for Holy Work—a haunting capture of a ZAKA volunteer at the site of a massacre in Kibbutz Be’eri. Schimmel is slated to take the stage in Miami to discuss the heavy mantle of documenting the massacre and its long shadow.

“Bearing Witness” on the Global Stage

The honour coincides with the resurgence of her debut book, October 7th | Bearing Witness. A gut-wrenching tapestry of photography, eulogies, and first-hand testimonies, the volume offers a definitive visual record of the year that changed Israel.

Despite a rapid sell-out of its initial U.S. print run, the book has returned to shelves to meet a global demand for Schimmel’s stark, essential reportage from the frontlines of history
