Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister’s Office announced on Saturday night.

Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The call was initiated by Putin, Netanyahu’s office said, and “followed a series of recent calls between them that dealt with regional issues.”

The statement from Jerusalem did not elaborate further, but according to the Kremlin, they discussed “developments in the Gaza Strip in light of the agreement on ceasefire and exchange of detained persons being implemented, the state of affairs surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, and issues concerning encouragement of further stabilization in Syria.”

Moscow has moved closer to the Islamic Republic of Iran in recent years to obtain drones, missiles and other arms for the war against Ukraine that started in February 2022.

During the 12-day war between the Jewish state and the Islamic Republic in June, Russia condemned the U.S. decision to join the attacks on Tehran’s nuclear sites as “unprovoked aggression.”
