Multiculturalism Minister praises Rabbi Kamins for “immense contribution”
NSW Multiculturalism Minister Steve Kamper has paid tribute to Rabbi Jeffrey B. Kamins, who will retire as Senior Rabbi of Emanuel Synagogue on 30 June 2026 after almost four decades of service.

Mr Kamper said Rabbi Kamins had been “a teacher and leader for many, stretching back many years,” applauding his “tireless leadership and incredible work” as he prepares to become Emanuel’s first Rabbi Emeritus.
“His contribution to the synagogue and the wider community is immense,” Mr Kamper said.
The minister also congratulated Rabbi Jacqueline Ninio, who will succeed Rabbi Kamins on 1 July 2026. Rabbi Ninio, who has served Emanuel for nearly three decades, made history in 2024 when she became the first female rabbi to be recognised with an Order of Australia honour.

“I congratulate Rabbi Jacqueline Ninio as she steps into her new role and look forward to working with her and Emanuel as Minister for Multiculturalism,” Mr Kamper said.
NSW Jewish Board of Deputies President David Ossip also paid tribute, describing Rabbi Kamins as “a pillar of our community” whose leadership has left “a legacy defined by integrity, warmth and service.”
Rabbi Kamins has served Emanuel since 1989 and as Senior Rabbi since 1999. Rabbi Ninio has been his colleague for 27 years and will now lead the clergy team with Rabbis Rafi Kaiserblueth, George Mordecai and Sam Zwarenstein, supported by Rabbi Kamins in his new role.
Mr Kamper, the member for Rockdale since 2015, holds multiple portfolios in the Minns government, including multiculturalism, lands and property, sport, small business, and jobs and tourism.
His comments came as Emanuel Synagogue confirmed its succession plan, with Rabbi Kamins to become Rabbi Emeritus and Rabbi Ninio to take up the Senior Rabbi role in July 2026.
