A memorial football tournament took place at Barracluff Park in Bondi on Saturday to celebrate the life and passion for the game of Dan Elkayam, one of the Jewish victims of the Bondi terror attack.

Friends and teammates organised the event to ensure he is remembered for the vibrant person he was, rather than solely for the tragic circumstances of his death. Organisers emphasised that football defined much of his identity, making a day on the pitch a fitting way to honour him.

Krystal Troyano, Elkayam’s partner and one of the key organisers, explained how the idea emerged in the days after the attack, saying they wanted “to make this meaningful somehow”, and that “everything related to Dan is related to football as well.”

She described the purpose of the tournament as a tribute to Elkayam’s deep love for the game.

Elkayam, 27, had moved to Sydney from France and formed strong friendships through football. He played locally for Rockdale Ilinden and had represented France at the European Maccabi Games, reflecting both his dedication to football and his Jewish identity.

The event, dubbed Dan’s Legacy Cup by friends on social media, brought together eight teams and dozens of players from Sydney’s football community.

Social media tributes shared before the tournament described him as a devoted husband, steadfast friend and enthusiastic footballer, with many highlighting his warmth, generosity and skill on the field.

At the tournament, players from his Rockdale Ilinden team paused for a minute’s silence before shouting “One, two, three, for Dan” as they returned to the field, a chant participants said captured the spirit of the day.

For those at Barracluff Park, the day centred on enjoying the sport he adored, exchanging memories and linking his name to community, sport and friendship rather than violence.
