The Federal Labour Friends of Israel (LFI) has welcomed the Australian government’s decisive move to expel the Iranian Ambassador and designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.

“This action has been long overdue from successive Australian administrations, and we commend the Albanese government for taking this crucial step,” said national convenors Dr. Mike Kelly and Eric Roozendaal in a statement today.
“Australia is now among a growing number of countries that recognize the IRGC as a terrorist entity.”
They emphasised that Australian Jewish organisations have raised alarms about the IRGC for many years, advocating for its designation as a terrorist organisation.
LFI serves as the national body within Federal Labor, dedicated to strengthening ties between the Australian Labor movement and Israel.
The organisation has persistently highlighted the security threat posed by Iran, endangering both Middle Eastern stability and the broader interests of democratic nations. Iran has been a central figure in the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict, orchestrating violence and aggression through its network of proxies, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.
LFI argues for urgent coordinated international action to maximize pressure on Iran to relinquish its nuclear weapons capabilities and halt the ongoing war in Gaza by compelling Hamas to disarm and release all hostages immediately.
The organisation also stresses the need for Australia to actively dismantle Iran’s financial infrastructure that supports its terror operations. LFI has called for additional measures such as freezing Iranian assets in Australia and collaborating with like-minded nations to dismantle the IRGC’s transnational crime networks, which are linked to operations in Dubai, Qatar, and the connections between the IRGC and South American drug lords.
Proceeds from the liquidation of Iranian assets in Australia should be directed toward the reconstruction of the Adass synagogue, which was firebombed by Iranian-inspired terrorists. LFI is particularly keen to leverage Australian technical expertise to disrupt Iran’s cryptocurrency operations, which the regime has developed to evade sanctions and generate illicit revenue.

Tim Wilson MP, Liberal Member for Goldstein, added: “I am deeply concerned and I’m not alone in this.

I would hope that every member of parliament, regardless of their party affiliation, is deeply concerned.

We have foreign interference and foreign actors working through criminal organisations or criminal actors within Australia and sponsoring them to engage in violent acts to destroy property and potentially risk lives, and of course to inflame tensions within the Australian community, but these were not unknown or limited risks.

The Coalition has gone out and warned consistently that this is a serious risk over the past couple of years and called for the listing of the Iranian regime as a terrorist organisation and now we’re in a situation where the government has finally done so on the advice of ASIO. We only wish they had have done it earlier.

I think when you look at the events of October 7, and the sponsoring of Hamas in the actions of not just Hamas and Hezbollah in the events October 7, and everything has cascaded since then from October 7. It’s been pretty clear they’ve been involved in trying to inflame tensions in Israel and around the world.

That is what has now come to light explicitly since in the past couple of days, but has been pretty clear since that point. And the consequence has been to human life, to property, but to social cohesion in Israel, in Australia and around the world. And of course we want a nation that is cohesive, we want a nation that’s respectful, we want a nation where people come together and seek to advance the objectives and national interests together. And when we have an environment where foreign actors are ceding discontent and turning Australians against each other, that is a deeply distressing environment and that is not a place that we want our country to go.”
