The family of Boris and Sofia Gurman has paid tribute to the couple killed in the Bondi Beach attack, describing them as devoted partners whose lives were shaped by kindness, hard work and care for others.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the family said they were heartbroken by the sudden deaths of Boris, 69, and Sofia, 61, who were on their way to attend a Chanukah event at Bondi Beach when they were caught up in the attack.

The couple had been married for 34 years and were preparing to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary in January. The family was also looking forward to marking Sofia’s 62nd birthday on Wednesday, 17 December.

Boris was a retired mechanic, known for his generosity, quiet strength and readiness to help anyone in need. Sofia worked at Australia Post and was deeply loved by her colleagues and the wider community. Together, they were described as having lived honest, hardworking lives and treating everyone they met with warmth and respect.

“They were devoted to their family and to each other,” the family said. “They were the heart of our family, and their absence has left an immeasurable void.”

In recent days, footage has emerged showing Boris, with Sofia by his side, heroically confronting one of the attackers during the early moments of the assault. The video (below) shows Boris attempting to disarm the attacker in an effort to protect others as the violence unfolded.

Family members said the footage, while deeply distressing, reflected the values that defined the couple’s lives.

“While nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel an overwhelming sense of pride in their bravery and selflessness,” the statement said. “This is who they were, people who instinctively tried to help others.”

The Gurmans were long-time residents of Sydney’s eastern suburbs and well known within their local community. Tributes have flowed from neighbours, colleagues and community members, many describing the couple as gentle, decent people whose actions spoke to their character.

The family thanked the community for the love and support shown to them since the attack and asked for privacy as they grieve.
