Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire – special screenings ahead of JIFF
This important recently-released documentary will screen in Melbourne and Sydney.
The Joint Australia will host the special pre-Jewish International Film Festival (JIFF) performances on Thursday, October 16 at the Ritz in Sydney and on Thursday, the 13th of November at the Classic Cinema in Melbourne.

The film showcases the intimate and profoundly moving portrait of Holocaust survivor, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and human rights advocate Elie Wiesel.
Eighty years after his liberation from Buchenwald, Soul on Fire explores the heart and mind of Elie Wiesel; writer, teacher, activist, and witness. Through rare archival material, intimate interviews, and Wiesel’s own powerful voice, the film explores the passions, struggles, and indelible legacy of a man whose life and words helped shape humanity’s understanding of the Holocaust and its enduring moral lessons.
Directed with rare sensitivity and visual beauty, the film features hand-painted animation and unprecedented access to Wiesel’s personal archives. It reveals not only the public figure celebrated for his advocacy and writings but also the private thinker, poet, and survivor wrestling with faith, memory, and responsibility.
Eliezer “Elie” Wiesel (1928–2016) was born in Sighetu Marmației, Romania, and survived the horrors of Auschwitz and Buchenwald. His seminal memoir Night, translated into more than 30 languages, remains one of the most widely read and haunting accounts of the Holocaust. Over his lifetime, Wiesel authored 57 books, became a global advocate for human rights, and was awarded the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless campaign against indifference and injustice.
“Elie Wiesel transformed personal tragedy into a universal call for moral courage,” said Eva Fischl OAM, President, The Joint Australia. “This pre-JIFF screening is an opportunity for the community to reflect on his message, one that remains as urgent and necessary today as ever”.
Elie Wiesel was the official Australian Patron of JDC Australia and it is an honour to pay tribute to this incredible man whose messages remain even more relevant two years on from October 7.
