Auckland Mayor clashes with pro-Palestinian group after refusing speaking request
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown faced heated scenes at Tuesday’s governing body meeting after refusing a request from the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa (PSNA) to address councillors, prompting protests and a brief disruption to proceedings.

Brown told the meeting that PSNA’s request had been declined because the governing body “does not have responsibility for Palestine.” The rejection was immediately challenged by Councillor Mike Lee, who raised a point of order and pressed the mayor to explain his decision.
“I have made my decision,” Brown replied. “I have just told you what it was.”
Councillor John Watson also backed Lee’s query, noting that PSNA sought permission to fly the Palestinian flag at Auckland Council facilities on the UN’s International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, held annually on November 29.
Watson said it was “entirely appropriate” for the group to speak directly to the governing body before a decision was reached.
Brown stood by the refusal and referred the matter to the council’s communities committee for consideration instead.
Minutes later, several PSNA supporters interrupted the meeting, shouting “shameful individual” at the mayor and chanting “Free, free Palestine.” In response, Brown quipped “Free beer,” prompting further criticism from protesters.
The exchange comes as councils nationwide continue to face pressure from activist groups seeking official recognition of Palestinian symbols or political statements. Auckland Council has previously maintained that foreign policy matters fall outside its jurisdiction.

Why not condemn the Palestinians who voted the murderous and barbaric Hamas into power and who slaughtered innocent Israelis?
They are the result of the Palestinians having to suffer.Hamas is committed to genocide of the Jewish people, Israel is merely defending itself.
The mayor of Christchurch and the majority of the Christchurch City Council are doggy-deep in support of ‘Palestinian’ terrorists and sanctioning Israel. If they were more focused on the job for which ratepayers pay them, the city wouldn’t be in such financial and physical chaos. Shame on them!
What is foolish about standing with Palestine?
They are being slaughtered and have genocide being committed against them? It is you and the Auckland mayor who are foolish
Why are they fools when they are fighting against an internationally recognised genocide. Hundreds of thousands murdered inlcuding thousands of children and child amputees. You give bring shame on NZ with that attitude.
Every council needs to refuse these fools.
