He has succeeded David Lewis, who concluded his five-year term at the synagogue’s AGM.

Mr Freedman a former Senior Vice President, has given longstanding service on the Board, and comes with his family’s legacy – including his late father who also held the position of President – reflecting a generational commitment to The Great Synagogue.

Outgoing President David Lewis said leading the congregation during a period of significant change and challenge has been an honour.

He told the AGM: “It has been an unprecedented time to serve as President of The Great Synagogue, and I am immensely proud of all that has been achieved during my tenure. From continuing the traditions that make our congregation unique, to navigating new opportunities for growth and connection, and most importantly ensuring the continuing safety of our members, the experience has been extraordinary. Leadership, however, is about renewal, and renewal is vitally important. While I am sad to conclude my term, I am delighted to be handing over to someone as knowledgeable, experienced, and deeply ingrained in our community as Max. His commitment will ensure thefuture of The Great Synagogue remains in very capable hands.”

Max Freedman said he is honoured to take on the leadership role.

“The Great Synagogue is not only a spiritual home but also a cultural landmark at the heart of Jewish life in Australia. My vision is to see our community continue to grow and flourish, attracting new members, deepening the connection with our existing congregation, and creating opportunities for people of all ages to come together. From inspiring services, to educational tours, from landmark events to concerts and cultural programs, we want The Great Synagogue to be a place that is vibrant, welcoming, and dynamic.”
