A sexual assault allegation has seen a prominent Melbourne synagogue stand down its caretaker.

The Caulfield Shule

According to the Herald Sun, Caulfield Synagogue stood aside an 88-year-old member of their staff on March 21st.

The person in question is believed to be the longest-serving synagogue caretaker in Australia, having spent more than 50 years in the role.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said detectives received a report of a sexual assault at premises on Inkerman Road in Caulfield North on March 5th.

The spokesperson said a formal complaint has not been received and the parties involved are yet to be spoken to in relation to the incident.

Dr Michelle Meyer, The Jewish Community Council of Victoria Executive member said: “Every serious allegation in our community regarding alleged sexual abuse is of paramount concern to the JCCV. All child-related organisations, including synagogues, have a legal responsibility to report such matters to the police. They also have a legal responsibility to conduct an investigation under the Reportable Conduct Scheme and this is being undertaken by Caulfield Shule at this time.

The JCCV encourages anyone seeking support at this difficult time to reach out at Jewish Care, Individual and Family Support Services or SECASA, the local sexual assault service. We recognise the bravery of those who have come forward in this matter”

Can someone explain why this man’s name has been published when it appears that no investigation has yet been commenced, no one has been charged and no one has been interviewed?

This is the most disgraceful article. Every other news organisation, affiliate of CHC and individuals have carefully refrained from naming anyone or publishing any facts that might help to identify any of the parties involved while it is dealt with according to established procedures. There is no justification for identifying anyone that is involved until the issue has been properly investigated and/or resolved.
