Former Foreign Minister and current Chairwoman of the Zionist Union MK Tzipi Livni has been named chairwoman of the opposition following the departure of Isaac Herzog, who was named as the new Chairman of the Jewish Agency last month.

This will be Livni’s second stint as minority leader, after filling the role as Chairwoman of Kadima during Binyamin Netanyahu’s second coalition in 2009.

The decision was made after an agreement was reached between Livni and Labor Chairman Avi Gabbay, who is unable to replace Herzog as chairman of the opposition, as he does not currently serve as an active Member of Knesset. Per their agreement, Livni will serve as chairwoman of the opposition with Gabbay’s blessing, and in return has committed not to dissolve the Zionist Union before the next elections and will run with her HaTnuah list alongside the Labor party.

“We chose to strengthen the Zionist Union as a base to create a wide bloc that will work together with the objective of replacing the current leadership,” Livni said at a press conference, adding a call to all those “who understand that this is a time of emergency,” to band together in order to form an emergency coalition. “Israel’s citizens will have the choice between the way of the [current] government, or our way. Each leader must choose a side. No one can stay on the fence,” said Livni.

Labor Chairman Avi Gabbay said: “MK Livni brings with her to the position much experience, especially in state and security matters,” adding that he has no doubt that Livni would “create new energy” within the opposition.

Outgoing opposition Chairman Herzog congratulated Gabbay’s decision to tap Livni, “Tzipi is the most worthy and most fitting to fill the role of head of the opposition, and I am convinced she will do so in the best way possible,” he said.
