Waverley Council believes speeding is a problem on York Rd which borders Sydney’s Moriah College…and has told the State Government that a speed camera should be installed outside the school.

Walt Secord

State Labor MP Walt Secord, a member of a NSW Parliamentary committee investigating safety at school zones, has warned the State Government that it must consult local communities and parents before it installs speed cameras outside Moriah College.

Earlier this week, Waverley Council’s training and community education officer told the Staysafe Committee (Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety) into School Zone Safety that she would like to see a speed camera outside Moriah College at Queens Park and St Catherine’s School in Waverley.

Under questioning, Waverley Council’s Meg Cunningham said she believed that speeding was a problem on York Road at Moriah College and would like to see the State Government considering putting a speed cameras there.

Outside the parliamentary committee, Mr Secord said: “The State Government said they were going to reduce the number of speed cameras; not increase them.

“Before they install a speed camera near Moriah College, the State Government must consult with the school and parents.”

“I am calling on the Roads Minister, Mr Duncan Gay to give an iron clad commitment that he will not install a speed camera outside Moriah College until he gets approval and consults with Moriah College and its parents.”

Moriah College president Mark Schneider told J-Wire: “I would have thought Moriah traffic  slows cars down rather than encourage speeding!  If they go ahead with a camera it would be seen as an advantage for Moriah as it would increase the safety of our students.”

Walt Secord is also deputy chair of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Israel.

The -ragtag group of overindulged jewish princesses- are the mothers of the students. The majority of these princesses are drivers of four wheel drive vehicles and they do use YORK Rd. They do not care about the traffic rules, parking regulations or speed limits. I live near the school.

However, the comment was that Walt Secord does not need to jump so quickly to defend us. Some suggestions and recommendations are to our advantage as a community of jewish people.

Moriah College never asked for the camera. Do try reading Greg!!

Personally, living in the vicinity of the school, I see no need for it. I cannot recollect ever seeing students using York Road.

Walt, I appreciate your support of all things jewish. But, to require that the Government needs to consult with a ragtag group of overindulged jewish princesses to see if they would like a speed camera installed is a bit much. They already create their own road and parking rules. These mothers would not want be hindered in any way. They may lose their parents disability parking permits.
Moriah College president Mark Schneider said it best – If they go ahead with a camera it would be seen as an advantage for Moriah as it would increase the safety of our students.”
