The Australian Federal Minister for Social Services has sent greetings for Rosh Hashanah…

Kevin Andrews

Kevin Andrews

It is with pleasure I send my best wishes to Australia’s Jewish community on Rosh Hashanah 5775, the Jewish New Year that constitutes one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.

Judaism first came to Australia in 1788 and has since added significantly to Australia’s diversity and social and cultural wealth.

Australian Jews have made a significant contribution to our nation in politics, business, philanthropy and the arts. As we mark the centenary of our nation’s involvement in the First World War, it’s particularly appropriate to note that General Sir John Monash is widely regarded as one of the finest Allied commanders in that conflict.

The Jewish community’s efforts have helped make Australia one of the most prosperous and forward looking countries in the world.

Australia’s cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths. The Australian Government’s approach to multiculturalism emphasises our shared values and commitment to our nation.

The Government also acknowledges that every Australian has a right to practice their religion, cultural traditions and language within the law.

Rosh Hashanah is a time for reflection and new beginnings. It reminds us that we must keep striving to reach out to our fellow Australians, united in our desire for a peaceful, harmonious and cohesive Australian society.

I wish all Australian Jews a Shanah Tovah, a very happy and healthy New Year.
