Protesters occupy Israeli company in Melbourne

The Israeli-based Elbit company’s offices in Port Melbourne have been occupied by pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

Elbit-2The building’s gates were padlocked by the group using heavy D-locks normally used for bicycles. A group of protestors made their way to the flat roof of the building and are standing ay the front of it bearing banners.

SighnsPolice  formed a line outside the building in Ingles St, Port Melbourne, preventing further entry.

A police spokesperson told J-Wire: “Police are monitoring a very small protest”.

But an Elbit employee said: “No-one from the company is in the building. I am at a different location. We cannot access the other one”.

Police later removed seven protesters from the property. A police spokesperson told J-Wire: “The seven were arrested then released pending summons for trespassing.”

Nina Bassat, the president of The Jewish Community Council of Victoria said: “This accentuates the difference between the sides in this conflict. The Jews in our community pray for peace and the Palestinian supporters express aggressive behaviour.”

Photos on the pro-Palestinian WACA Twitter site show that the group entered the building very early this morning as it is still dark in the image.

    Right… so protesters are the aggressive ones and they are just a peaceful arms corporation… such irony has not been seen since the scene in Dr. Strangelove where they said “shh… there will be no fighting in the war room.”
