The Christmas message of peace on earth and goodwill to all bypassed a Jewish home in Melbourne’s Elsternwick.

The house in Parkside Street had windows and walls daubed with swastikas and other Nazi symbols.

A passerby posted on his Facebook: “The newspapers are covering most of them up ! What’s this place coming too !”

The perpetrator managed to get past a metal gate to get access the windows of the house itself as well as spraying slogans on the brickwork bordering the home.

The Daily Mail reports that other homes were also targeted.

Dr Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission said: “We decry this disturbing act of bigotry which is an attack on the decency of all Australians. I am alarmed by the growing level of malicious antisemitic vandalism and graffiti which constitutes a matter of grave concern.

It fits a pattern of increased bias-motivated crimes targeting the Jewish community. The Nazi swastika is a universal symbol of hate that represents pure evil, and is meant to intimidate and instil fear within religious, ethnic and cultural groups. This type of hate has no place in Australia, and such cowardly attacks are repugnant and are a gross violation of our values.

There is no doubt that the spike in these threatening incidents, which traumatise the victims and create a climate of fear, serves as a sad reminder that antisemitism and is on the rise, and the message that must be conveyed by leaders across the political and religious spectrum is that this type of intimidating bigotry will not be tolerated. We must all say enough is enough, not in our city, and do all we can to combat this cancer.”

My heart goes out to those people. I hope the perps can be tracked down soon and dealt with.

  2. Lynne Newington says:

Hopefully security cameras were installed and perpetrators quickly apprehended.
Security cameras I remind you are used for many within our society and not just singled out for our Jewish community.

I’m wondering if they’re blaming the Jerusalem issue.
The recent messages coming from The Holy See doesn’t help afraid of losing
a long held plan for the internationalization of Jerusalem protecting it’s rights in Palestine.
Not as obscure as one may think.

  3. Adrian Jackson says:

Ban all spray paint cans period in Australia.

Melbourne is covered with unwanted graffiti particularly along railway easements, tram lines and back fences on lanes. Occasional front fences are vandalized too.
