The ACT Jewish Community (ACTJC) is seeking a new Rabbi to serve their warm and lively congregation in the nation’s capital Canberra.

The Community currently has around 200 membership units, covering all age groups. The ACTJC is home to a modern Orthodox and a Progressive congregation, holding regular services in the same building. Members of both congregations come together for chaggim and simchas, and diversity and mutual respect are an important part of what makes this tight-knit community so special.

There is a strong spirit of volunteering, with an elected Board, and members running a wide range of social and cultural activities, and publishing a quarterly newsletter. There are active local branches of the National Council of Jewish Women, the Zionist Federation of Australia, and the Australian Jewish Historical Society, a book club, and social groups catering for men and women. The Community is about to start construction of a landmark building project, which will double its classroom space, and provide new rooms for functions.

The Community is seeking an enthusiastic, well-organised Rabbi to minister to the modern Orthodox congregation; to serve as the spiritual and community leader of all members of the ACTJC; and to organise and deliver stimulating and inspirational Jewish learning to adults, youth and children to encourage and sustain their religious, spiritual, cultural and historical ties with Judaism. Kosher food is readily available in Canberra, and there is a mikvah also.

Education is of paramount importance to the Community, with a diverse range of programs catering for tots, tweens, teens and youth, ably assisted by a shlichim couple from Israel. As President Veronica Leydman says: “children are the future of the community, and with these programs, we see a bright future for Jewish life in Canberra”. There are also adult education programs, catering to Community members wishing to increase their Jewish knowledge and to candidates for gerut (conversion).

Given the ACTJC’s location in Australia’s capital, it plays an important role in national events and dialogue on Jewish issues. The recently constructed Australian Jewish War Memorial, housed at the ACTJC, is the focus for honouring the contribution of Jewish service members to the country.

The ACT Jewish Community would welcome applications from Rabbis in Australia and overseas, who would like to serve a vibrant, friendly small community, with a deep commitment to education, unity in diversity, and further growth. Further information is available by emailing:  president@actjc.org.au.

  1. Rafi says:

The previous Rabbi did not, pardon me, “ disappear “

  2. miriam says:

What happened to the last rabbi??
    When did he disappear?

And not a single mention of the active Chabad rabbi and presence there?
    Strange, no?
