I attended the polling station earlier today to vote "no" in the referendum. While there, I engaged in conversation with the gentleman distributing the "no" how-to-vote cards. He was no far-right extremist, neo-Nazi, or racist. He seemed to be a mainstream Australian. He was well-spoken yet affable, and did not express any views that could be construed as intolerant or promoting division in society. Overall, from our brief exchange, my assessment was that he appeared to be an ordinary citizen participating in the democratic process, not someone seeking to stir civil unrest or spread hateful rhetoric. I came away feeling confident that at least in this instance, the "no" campaign presentation was respectful and reasonable rather than extremist in nature.

I only had a brief discussion with the woman handling the "yes" how-to-vote cards. However, she also struck me as being mainstream in her views.
