The member for the Sydney seat of Berowra told J-Wire: “Last week my election posters were defaced with Swastikas, Hitler moustaches and stickers from the Electrical Trades Union. It was shocking and is out of character for the people of the Berowra electorate. However, it is a reminder that we need to do more to educate people on the evils of antisemitism,” said

Julian Leeser added: “I’m encouraged by the positive response from the Berowra community and the Jewish community, and I encourage people of goodwill to support my campaign.”

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies chief executive Vic Alhadeff condemned the incident: “This is but the latest in an alarming spike in antiSemitic incidents in recent days, from swastikas in Bondi to appalling posts on social media. Targeting a member of parliament who happens to be Jewish is not what Australia is about.
“All forms of bigotry are abhorrent, and it is essential that leaders across civil society call out such vile acts and condemn them whenever they occur.

I don’t know why the response to evil, or just to plain old bad, is so often, ‘that’s not what Australia is about’ or ‘it’s unAustralian’, because the fact is Australia has to own its baddies as well as its goodies. And as much as there are certain values many of us embrace, we know only too well that there are some who do not do so. And, yes, they are Australian, too.

This is a sickening, disgraceful act and Julian Leeser should not have had to withstand it. I hope the perpetrator/s is caught.
