Members of the Melbourne community has come together to help celebrate the first ever Sefer Torah to service the Jewish community in North Queensland.

The letter writing ceremony was held at the house of the donors, Tom and Issy Jacob and the torah has been written in honor and memory of their parents.

For over twenty years the Chabad of RARA (Rural and Regional Australia) team, led by Saul and Beverly Spigler have visited the North Queensland region. Eighteen months ago, Chabad of RARA set up a permanent Chabad House in the Region. Now, there will finally be a Sefer Torah in Cairns for good. The lack of a Sefer Torah has been one of the main issues Rabbi Ari and Mushkie Rubin have had to deal with. The constant borrowing of various Sifrei Torahs for their events was becoming a big burden.

Tom and Issy Jacob decided enough was enough and they took it upon themselves to make sure a brand new Torah Scroll will be written to be used exclusively by the Chabad of RARA community in North Queensland. The actual Siyum and Hachnasas Sefer Torah will be held in Cairns next week and will be a memorable occasion for the community in the small city in the far North of Australia with the new Sefer Torah being paraded in the the city accompanied by music.
