Following the Senator Penny Wong’s resolution passed at yesterday’s ALP national conference which stated that a Labor government would seek to recognise Palestine’s statehood, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has reaffirmed Labor’s support for Israel.

Mark Dreyfus

He told J-Wire: “This resolution of Labor’s National Conference strongly affirms both Israel and a future state of Palestine’s right to exist within secure borders.

As Penny said in her speech, Labor is a friend of Israel.  That deep and lasting friendship, since before the modern state of Israel was established, will never change.
Labor’s long-standing position is that all decisions should contribute to peace by progressing a two-state resolution of the conflict, agreed by the parties.

Unlike Scott Morrison, Labor does not view Middle East issues through a domestic political lens to be recklessly exploited for cynical, short-term political purposes.
We in Labor understand that the generational conflict between Israelis and Palestinians can only be solved by the parties to that conflict, supported by their friends in the international community. Labor wants to contribute to long-lasting peace in the region, and that will continue to be our aim whether in Opposition or Government.”

The kind of effrontery that is demonstrated by politicians who have the temerity to dictate to a state where its capital should be is effrontery that is directed only against Jews, and nobody else- and that includes politicians “of Jewish background,” too.

    They’re dangerous for Australia.

Mark Dreyfus is a huge disappointment in regard to his lack of support for Israel and his willingness to go along with the ridiculous waffle spoken by Labor about its so-called friendship with Israel. To recognise Palestinian Statehood is to impede any future Israeli/Palestinian negotiations by letting the Palestinians in the back way, with absolutely no regard to Israel’s security. Currently, the Palestinians don’t even meet the legal criteria necessary for statehood, and Dreyfus should know that. All these people who automatically spout the two state solution to show their balanced view of the matter while actually striving for Palestinian rights at the expense of Israel are boring to an extreme, so obvious are they.

Spare us the hypocrisy, Labor, and the doublespeak. You’re joining all the non-thinking left-wing lightweights internationally who can’t face reality and believe in romanticising terrorists and hatemongers.

As for anybody outside the State of Israel naming Tel Aviv as capital, what extraordinary chutzpah and how ridiculous. How can Chris Bowen, or anybody else, choose the capital of Israel?

A big load of ALP garbage!
If you don’t want a Hamas or Fatah ambassador in Canberra, do not vote Labor.

Dreyfus must think we are all stupid !
It was Penny Wong that proposed the resolution to recognize a Palestinian state and that this issue was the most important to tackle once in power, she is hardly on Israel’s side for heaven sake ,deep and lasting friendship what a lot of crap from Dreyfus!
When asked in an interview on SkyNews Sunday what is the capital of Israel Chris Bowen clearly stated Tel Aviv and that once in power they will reverse Morrison’s initiative confirming West Jerusalem as its capital.
I hear Dreyfus supported these views along with Tony Burke and other Israel critics.

Dreyfus cannot be trusted when it comes to Israel and even worse on other issues like immigration and 18C, which he stated, he wanted to widen the circle.

I believe Dreyfus is a dangerous politician along with Tony Burke when it comes to Australian /Israel relations, he has

    Have I misssed something?
How is recognising the “statehood” of Palestine not pre-empting final status negotiations, something Mark Dreyfus declares only Israel and the Palestinian Arabs can do?
Seems to me Mark has re-affirmed his own support for Israel but not that of his party with whom he would appear to be at odds.

It reeks of double standards of course that Labour will recognise a yet-to-be-realised Palestinian state in advance of final status negotiations but will not recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
