The Leibler Yavneh College has added its name to the list of Jewish Day Schools which have openly expressed their position of being against  discrimination against students and staff over their sexual preferences. In a submission to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee’s enquiry into allowing faith-based educational institutions to discriminate on the basis of gender identity, sexual orientation or other protected attributes the school wrote that it is a Religious Zionist Jewish day school in Melbourne.

Principal Cherylyn Skewes and Chair Avi Gilboa stated: “Our College ethos is underpinned by Jewish Law (Halacha) which mandates love and compassion towards our fellow. As such, we ask that the Senate Inquiry ensures that no student or staff member suffers any form of discrimination including those relating to sexual orientation and gender.

As an outcome of the Inquiry, we seek a balanced legislation; one which ensures that the wellbeing of our students and staff is held to be paramount and that contemporaneously acknowledges our responsibility to educate our community and administer our school in concert and alignment with Jewish Law.

It is our sincere hope that the Senate Inquiry will achieve an outcome which supports students, staff and our tradition.”

Jewish Day Schools who have gone public are Leibler Yavneh College, Mount Scopus College, The King David School and Bialik College in Melbourne and Mount Sinai College and the Emanuel  School in Sydney.
