Dayenu’s float in Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras last night was welcomed enthusiastically by the 400,000-strong crowd and was televised on Foxtel.

Mardi Gras Good Time

More than 75 Dayenu members along with partners, family, friends and supporters danced along behind the float to “Shalom Aleichem”, “Hava Nagila” and “Barbra Streisand” by Duck Sauce. The float was adorned by a 2.5m high beautifully-lit, sparkly 3-dimensional Magen David accompanied by half-a-dozen dancing boys and girls.  An energetic yet simple dance routine was created by a locally-based Israeli choreographer.

The theme for Dayenu’s eleventh appearance in the parade was “Let There Be Light”, a call to gay members of the Jewish community to be loud, proud and out there.  The float hopes to raise awareness of both homophobia in the Jewish community and antisemitism in the GLBT community.  Tying in with Mardi Gras’ overall theme of “Say Something”, the float challenged prejudice and misconceptions that exist in both communities.

Steve Zolkov can’t help it…it’s called ignorance and bigotry.

That coming from a Jew is a disgrace.

    Shame on you Steve Zolkov..shame

For Zolkov – time will heal your wounds. You will, as we say in America – be unwept, unhonored, and unsung.

But in the next life you can go find people so similar to you. Hitler, stalin, Saddam etc.

  3. Steven Bloom says:

Thanks to Dayenu and the fantastic and dedicated committee for organizing everything for Mardi Gras. I had a brilliant time. I was proud to march and dance and be with people to show Jews can have equality and acceptance no matter what their sexuality is. I laughed and cried all the way!

Wow, Steve, with bigotry like yours who needs anti-semitism? You think its admirable to display such hatred? You think people have any respect for such intolerance? I have news for you… .
Good job, Dayenu, you make me proud to be Jewish.

Congratulations to you all!! There will always be bigots out there, but that darkness cannot exist where there is even an iota of light. We in the Jewish community are used to persecution but that has never stopped us and it never will. Be brilliant Dayenu. Well done!
