NSW Jewish Board of Deputies President, Yair Miller, has been appointed to a high profile board of governors of the newly established International School of Jewish Leadership (ISJL) – an outgrowth of Beren College at Beit Morasha of Jerusalem. The Board of Governors is chaired by the Hon. Irwin Cotler MP. High profile Israeli Professor Benjamin Ish Shalom is President of Beit Morasha.

As individuals and as communities, today’s Jewish people are adrift in a fragmented world of myriad identities and values. Many of today’s young Jews feel alienated and disillusioned with the Jewish establishment and the State of Israel. Jewish communities have no joint mission or vision to unite them.  To survive and flourish as a people, the school is looking to develop a passionate shared vision that imbues Jewish identification with new meaning and Jewish responsibility with new energy. To develop and spearhead this encompassing vision of Jewish Peoplehood, a global Jewish leadership is needed with the ability to inspire contemporary Jewry with a compelling and profound message.

The International School of Jewish Leadership (ISJL) is a major initiative of Beit Morasha located at the Kiryat Moriah campus in Jerusalem. The ISJL will focus on developing the vision of the Jewish people as a global national community with Israel at its centre. ISJL will train and empower a new Jewish leadership that embodies this vision and applies it in positions of communal and political leadership, educational innovation and public service.

The ISJL will offer two study tracks: short term Leadership Enhancement Programs and the ISJL Fellows Program.  The Leadership Enhancement Programs will offer study and leadership enhancement programs, seminars and conferences tailored to the needs and skills of specific professional populations, impacting and informing the vision of Jewish Peoplehood on a broad scale.

The Fellows Program will consist of a 16 month full time leadership training program, in English, for selected young Jewish leaders from Israel and the Jewish world, offering an opportunity for development that is not merely academic or skills-oriented, but one that focuses on the entire personality of potential leaders, a program that develops the emotional, interpersonal and intellectual depth and maturity of each Fellow, and forms an active worldwide network of young Jewish leadership. The academic program will revolve around the concept of Jewish Civilization, viewing the treasures of Jewish ethics, ideas and traditions as the wellspring for effective Jewish leadership, and as the framework to explore the many facets of contemporary Jewish identity and the challenges of formulating an inspired and committed Jewish Peoplehood.

Initial programming of the Leadership Enhancement Programs has begun with two leadership groups from Scandinavia. The ISJL is presently running a high level leadership seminar for senior IDF officers of the rank of Colonel and Brigadier General who are transitioning from military command to significant civilian leadership roles.

Spot on,brilliant, deep, ispirational, insightful, but most of all informative.
I am only repeating the comments in the above introduction to the idea of the said school, with only one syntax diferrence,i.e “?!!?”

    – Jews around the world with NO common ideals ?!!?

    – most young Jews are today lost and devoid of a communal purpose ?!!?

    – we need a sense and direction of Jewish identity ?!!?

There is an urgent need for answers to all of the above, unless my questions are rhetorical ?!!?
