A  TV production company is looking for a young Jewish adult to swap homes with a member of another religion for two weeks in order to learn how the other half lives.

Director Varcha Sidwell talks to candidates

Holy Switch to be screened towards the end of the year will feature six Australians between the ages of 18 and 25 five of whom will represent the mainstream religions of Buddhism, Christianity, Hindu, Islam and Judaism. A slot has been reserved for a candidate from without the major religious systems.

The producers of the show are sensitive to the problems facing Jewish candidates who are strictly Kosher.

Researcher Tammy Burnstock who is Jewish herself told J-Wire: “Of course I am aware that there many members of the community who come from Kosher homes but will eat out even on a restricted basis. This would be ideal for us as the dialogue around the table at meal times should produce interesting footage. But I have to stress that whomever we choose from the Jewish perspective will have to have a degree of commitment to Judaism.”

The six candidates will be paired off and swap homes for a two week period sometime during March and May.

Burnstock said that the camera crew would not be in attendance during their stays but would make frequent visits to record the progress of the developing relationships.

She added: “We have chosen this age group as it will feature young people who are still exploring their faith and their identities.”

Holy Switch will be screened on ABC-TV’s “Compass” program. Director Varcha Sidwell said: “The plan is to show all Australians a close-up of someone else’s culture as seen from another faith. Hopefully we will be able to provide a suitable pairing for a Jewish person who can be provided with acceptable food.”

Indeed, one must be very careful that a REPRESENTATIVE of our religious practices is chosen, not someone invested wuth that status but devoid of knowledge and his/her own commitment to what are true Judaic principles, otherwise we may end up with not just that vacuous elements, but seriously distorted, misleading and downright offensive “insights” of some nebesh of the so called “leftist”, seriously derailed “ideologies”. Then we’ll be stuck with “this is what ALL Jews are like” sticky label !!

Shouldn’t that be how the other 98% or so live?
