The Nazi flag flying in the town of Beulah in north-west Victoria has been brought down following a joint push by neighbours and local police.

State Liberal MP David Southwick contacted the Yarriambiack Shire Council, local police and residents to assist in coordinating efforts to have the flag removed.

This incident drew unanimous condemnation from the local community and fortunately thanks to the efforts of those involved, the flag was removed late on Tuesday evening.

Once again, this incident demonstrates the rising wave of antisemitism and racial hatred in Victoria and highlights the need for greater State Government action to crack down on incidents such as these in the future. with

David Southwick said: “Having a Nazi flag displayed in a small fruit farming country town that has people from different multicultural backgrounds including Jewish and Muslim shows that nobody is safe from this hate

After speaking to many locals in the town to get the flag removed I was encouraged by the community’s condemnation of this act and I would particularly like to thank the local police and Council CEO for their efforts in getting the flag taken down, as well as Dvir Abramovich and the Anti-Defamation Commission for bringing this issue to the public’s attention.

A symbol is as powerful as a word and it is clear Daniel Andrews needs to introduce stronger laws to stamp out the public display of the Swastika in Victoria”

He added: “It was largely the great work of the local council and local police that did it. I had discussions with a number of locals as well who all were angered. I am sure the broader media on this putting the issue out there also helped.
