The New Israel Fund Australia is hosting a digital event with veteran New York Times columnist Roger Cohen and academic and former deputy Knesset speaker Naomi Chazan to delve further into the troubling attacks on democracy and pluralism around the world.

During the event, just one week after the US elections, they’ll discuss the result and its impact on a divided American society, as well as the ongoing uncertainty in Israel’s political system, and the broader threats facing democracies worldwide, particularly during the Covid pandemic.

“It is a privilege to hear from two such leaders in their fields, with such a wealth of knowledge and experience between them,” said NIF Australia executive director Liam Getreu. “This is one of the most consequential elections in modern US opportunity, and we also wanted to use it as an opportunity to also look more broadly at the threats to democracy worldwide. I can’t think of two better people to discuss this increasingly wide-ranging phenomenon and its implications” he added.

Cohen joined the New York Times in 1990. He was a foreign correspondent for more than a decade before becoming foreign editor. Since 2004, he has written a column for the International New York Times, formerly known as the International Herald Tribune. In 2009 he was named a columnist of the New York Times. He is also a prolific author.

Naomi Chazan

Professor Chazan is synonymous with an Israel that defends human rights, promotes equality and seeks a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Her commitment to building an Israel as envisioned by the Declaration of Independence has been seen in her varied roles as a former deputy speaker for the Knesset for Meretz, a senior Israeli academic, activist for women’s rights, and former president of the New Israel Fund.

They will also speak about the growing power of individuals willing to stand up for their rights and protest whether in Israel, Hong Kong or Belarus.

The event is on Thursday 12, November at 8pm.

One Response to “Democracy in Danger”
  1. Leon Poddebsky says:

The worldview of the so-called “New Israel Fund”, and Roger Cohen and Naomi Hazan et al is that even if the overwhelming majority of voters elect centre right governments (as the voters in successive Israeli elections have done), then “democracy is in danger.”
“Democracy” is their Orwellian “Newspeak” word for “perpetual rule by the ‘left.'”
