At least 50 Coalition MPs have signed the London Declaration Combating Anti-semitism.

Jewish MP Joshua Frydenberg helped coordinate a mass signing on Tuesday with his Liberal and National colleagues.

“This is a fantastic result given the importance of the subject and the Declaration itself,” he said.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott also signed on today. Senators are expected to sign on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard signed the declaration on April 23. Preset at the signing were Labor MPs Mark Dreyfus and Michael Danby.

Attorney-General Dreyfus told J-Wire: “The Prime Minister represented our nation, our government and the Parliamentary Labor Party when she signed the London Declaration combating antisemitism.”

Parliamentary Secretary for he Arts Michael Danby added: “I am pleased that the Prime Minister’s action on the London Declaration has prompted the Coalition to join us in signing this important document.”

The London Declaration on Combatting Anti-semitism was launched in London in February 2009 by global parliamentarians who resolved to”expose, challenge, and isolate political actors who engage in hate against Jews and target the State of Israel as a Jewish collectivity”.

A spokesman for Mark Dreyfus said: “It should be clear that the addition of Australian parliamentary signatories is a show of bi-partisan support in the fight against antisemitism”.
When Prime Minister Gillard signed the declaration on April 23, she issued a statement saying that antisemitism did not end with the fall of Nazism. “It pollutes our world right now,” she said. “In the face of antisemitism, there can be no bystanders.”

But Professor Stuart Rees, a longstanding Israel critic at the University of Sydney, blasted the signatories this week. “The resort to charges of antisemitism regarding the world-wide criticisms of the internationally illegal policies of the government of Israel is an age-old technique to stifle any criticism of blatant human rights abuses,” the Australian newspaper quoted him as saying on Tuesday.
Some 200 legislators from 40 countries are believed to have signed it, with Australians now comprising more than one-quarer of the signatories.

Our FM is at his loudest with his silence and lack of action, on any issue, including this one. I am beginning to dislike Bob Carr intensely (which I know is neither here nor there) – he struts around like a rooster and his mouth appears to be becoming more alarmingly large by the month, so ready is he to pronounce his opinion on everything going, and advise other countries as to what he deems their actions and ideology should be. He is inflated with his own self-importance and opinions. And the only good thing about a Coalition victory next September would be the departure of Bob Carr as Foreign Minister. This response is apropos Paul’s slight reference to ‘our FM’ in his posting.
Back to the London Declaration: better to have it than not.

What might be interesting is to list the names of those who chose not to sign (separately from those who weren’t available at the signing).

  3. Otto Waldmann says:

Just to be consistent with my previous comments on the subject, I am a bit curious about the system with this Declaration and requirements on its endorsement.
Is it a kind of individual requirement or a formal gorenment imprimatur. If persnal then any individual with a stake in public life, politician or not, would be expected to sign. Considering the EIGHT YEAR lapse in the adherence to its principles by the relevant (!!) Australians, I also wonder if the Document itself has been known at all by “mere” MPs, including Opposition leader/shadow ministers etc.

  4. Leon says:

Is this a Liberal advertisment or a bad joke. Everyone who has a brain knows what is going on.Our so called media is so pro Liberal that it is a joke.Look at who appears at our luncheons and the love affair with Turnbull. Get Real

  5. Paul Winter says:

The coalition is making a principled statement as have our PM and some government parliamentarians.

The principles of those who fail to associate with the London Declaration Combating Anti-Semitism must be questioned. I am thinking of our FM, various Labour parliamentarians and members of the Greens.

  6. Rita says:

Good for them. This restores some of my faith in the conservatives, after they have been a little too enthusiastic about “multiculturalism”, a euphemism these days for some worrying trends.
