The 5 permanent members of the UN security council have passed their use-by date since 1945. Great Britain and France are no longer super powers with an empire each while the USSR is now only represented by Russia. The USA and China are still members although China (PRC) was represented by Taiwan (ROC) in the early decades. The General Assembly is were votes should be taken on all matters like any other parliament.

While specifically informative about the UN, Cohen wanders into risky territory about Chinese treatment of Uyghurs. A democratic and humane treatment of individuals of any group must ideally be maintained but then again large groups pose a challenge, especially if not recognized and then ignored. Uyghur is simply a specific regional name for followers of Islam, which demands of its followers a set of rules which shun other rules. The Chinese government by comparison is humane relative to the proponents of a 2 State Solution. Evidence is the question about which 2 state solution are you talking about. eg. The partition of India in the 1940s? Then flouted by Pakistani General Musharraf in the 90s with an invasion of Kashmir which even lefty Bill Clinton opposed. Islamic Separatists now in the Philippines? Growing rebellions of Muslims in Britain, one of which protested the immigration of Asia Bibi, resulting in her brutal mob murder in her native Pakistan for converting to Christianity. We need to appreciate that part of China’s even handed approach to real religion, which has nothing to do with its sober reaction to political movements which challenge its governance. Jews especially should be appreciative of China’s past protection. Sadly a great portion of the intellectual world lacks a derp and clear understanding of the difference between politics and religion. For all his talent, knowledge and writing skills Mr Cohen shows that he is only human and could learn something by closer observation: That there is No Two State Solution, it is a euphemism for the ultimate goal of a One State Solution. “Two” in that context only means ‘divide by two”, and then divide again ad infinitum. God Bless you for your opinion Ben
