The Morrison Government will provide an additional $1.3 million to establish the Canberra Holocaust Museum and Education Centre as part of an ongoing commitment to support Holocaust awareness in Australia.

Acting Minister for Education and Youth Stuart Robert announced the additional funding support on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, bringing the Commonwealth’s financial commitment to the project to around $2 million.

Stuart Robert said: ‘Today we remember those who lost their lives and reflect on the devastating impact of the Holocaust on the international Jewish community,’ Minister Robert said.

‘We owe it to those who died or lost loved ones to ensure this dark period of history is never forgotten and never repeated, and educating future generations has a key role to play in achieving this.

‘I am pleased this funding will help get the Canberra Holocaust Museum and Education Centre off the ground and on its way to becoming a valuable resource to educate Australia’s youth.

ACT Jewish Community Treasurer and Facilities Committee Chair Dr David Rosalky said: “On this International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the horrors perpetrated when people turn their hatred towards a targeted group.  Such attacks have been experienced by peoples in many countries over the centuries.

As Jews, we remember in particular the devastation of the Nazi Holocaust when 6 million Jews were murdered including 1.5 million children. Societies need to understand what happened in the Holocaust and what factors led to the actions.

Governments throughout Australia have addressed this need by funding museums and memorials where citizens can be educated about the events of the Holocaust.

Here, in the national capital, the Commonwealth Government and the ACT Government have committed funding to the ACT Jewish Community to establish a Holocaust Museum and Education Centre.  The Commonwealth has provided $2 million for capital purposes which will fund the physical structure of a museum in the grounds of the National Jewish Memorial Centre in Forrest.  The ACT Government has granted $0.75 million from which the educational platforms and an education program will be developed.

The Centre will make a valuable contribution to the education of visitors to the National Jewish Memorial Centre, especially the groups of school children who regularly visit. The museum will contain a display depicting basic Judaism practices, beliefs and rituals.  It will show the nature of pre-war European Jewish society and the destruction that was brought upon it.  The nature of the Holocaust will be illustrated, leading to an understanding of how democratic and law-based society, highlighted through the institutions of government in our nation’s capital, can prevent such tragedies.

With funding secured, the ACT Jewish Community has commenced planning and expects to see construction starting before the end of 2022.

The ACTJC is most grateful to the Commonwealth and ACT governments for supporting this important initiative which will bring the national capital into the nation-wide fold of centres for commemorating the Holocaust and educating the next generation, so that memory is not lost.”
