NSW State Labor MLC Walt Secord has called on the Minister for Communities and Citizenship to create a new offence of “racist graffiti” – a first in Australia.

Mr Secord made the comments in the NSW Legislative Council yesterday during a debate on the “Graffiti Legislation Amendment Bill”.

Walt Secord

He told the Council: “I would like to see NSW become the first State in Australia to have such an offence on the books.  I am certain that it would be welcomed by the various communities in NSW.

I am calling on the Minister for Communities and Citizenship, Mr Victor Dominello to create an offence of “racist graffiti.

Who could forget the disgusting racist graffiti in the late-1980s and early 1990s around Sydney and Perth with National Action and the Australian Nationalist Movement targeting the Chinese, Vietnamese and Jewish communities?

The Australian Jewish community reports that there are between 15 to 20 serious antisemitic graffiti incidents a year on Jewish places of worships.

This has no place in Australia – either then or now.

Daubing a racist slogan on a temple, church, synagogue or mosque is not expression, it is outright offence – and has no place in this nation.  It is simply disgusting.

I assert that NSW judges should have the power to deem racist graffiti as an aggravated offence carrying tougher penalties for offenders.

In the spirit of bipartisanship, I urge the Minister for Communities and Citizenship to take up this proposal.”

I understand why people would want these laws, but I fear further anti-racism laws will be used by some to silence anyone standing up to the Islamification of Western countries. Be very careful what you ask for as it may backfire. And any Jew, Christian or Hindu who thinks he can live in peace with Islam is a fool.
