The NSW Jewish Board of Deputies has held its monthly plenum on Sydney’s North Shore for the first time in its 65-year history.

The plenum was held across the bridge at Cremorne Synagogue as part of an ongoing strategy of engaging with different congregations. Plenum meetings have been held in recent months at Newtown and Maroubra Synagogues.

Rabbi Shmuel Cohen gave a Dvar Torah, shul president Harold Marshbaum welcomed 100 members of the community to the synagogue and Board of Deputies president Yair Miller emphasised the importance of involving the many components of the community in the work of its roof-body.

With an eye to the vote on Palestinian statehood at the United Nations, the meeting was addressed by World Jewish Congress vice-president Robert Goot and Executive Council of Australian Jewry executive director Peter Wertheim on the five options available to the Palestinian Authority and the implications of each one.

Miller announced that elections for General Franchise deputies would be held this year, with the deadline for nominations the October 18 plenum and results at the November 15 plenum.
