There is no doubt whatsoever that Jerusalem is the eternal Capital of the Promised Land. All opposition to this eternal verity will eventually be overcome.

Mr Wertheim’s claim that the designation of Jerusalem as the capital “would in no way pre-judge the future status of the contested eastern part” would have more weight if Israel’s government actually favoured a capital in E Jerusalem for the Palestinians and were working to ensure this outcome.

In the absence of such evidence, the embassy move will be regarded as preferring one side at the expense of the other.

The question put in the YouGov survey was completely one sided. The results would be different if the question mentioned one word about Palestinian claims to East Jerusalem and ended with the words “…in circumstances where Israel opposes a Palestinian capital in the Eastern Jerusalem”.

Wishful thinking and a touching faith in polls cannot unfortunately disguise the reality that times are changing in Australia.

Malcolm Turnbull who waxed eloquently at the Beersheba centennial celebration last year about the Jewish connection to Israel is now singing a different tune and is against recognizing Jerusalem as our Capital and shifting the Embassy.

Does anyone seriously believe that a Labor led Government will suddenly embrace the idea? Trade considerations and politically correctness will ensure Australia like New Zealand will drop it like a hot latke.

The polls are meaningless in the context of this subject.

Wentworth voters did not think so.

I remember 20 years the opinion polls said the pro republican Yes vote would win in Australia. The opinion got that wrong. Option polls are rubbish these days.
