Australian Jewish War Memorial to be unveiled in Canberra
Secretary of the ACT Jewish Community Dr Merrilyn Sernack has announced that the dedication of the new Australian Jewish War Memorialwill coincide with the commemoration of the Centenary of General Sir John Monash’s knighthood on Sunday 12thAugust 2018.

The Cenotaph, in the grounds of the National Jewish Memorial Centre, Forrest, will incorporate the memorial roll of Australian Jews who Died on Service with the Defence Force from 1900 to date. The names have been collated with the assistance of the Australian Jewish Historical Society’s Russell Stern, and Peter Allen, national coordinator of the Centenary of Anzac Jewish Program.
The service and cenotaph will be a most fitting culmination to the CoAJP’s Australia-wide projects that commenced in 2014, Peter Allen said.
The ceremony will include military elements and music by the Sydney Jewish Choral Society, and stories of soldiers. It will highlight Monash’s decisive victories with the AIF on the Western Front at Hamel and Amiens on 4th July and 8th August of 1918 respectively. The service will acknowledge those members of the Jewish community who served and, in particular, those who sacrificed their lives in the South African War, WWI, WWII and subsequently for the love of a country that had also given many refuge from persecution.
Government dignitaries, senior representatives of the ADF and Jewish organisations from all states and territories of Australia will be invited to attend, together with Jewish ex-service and currently serving men and women.

I doubt that the producers of ‘Monash and Me’ were aware of the AJWM or associated service.
I do not agree that Peter Greste or the documentary ‘undermined’ Monash’s story.
And Monash’s personal life is no secret: read Roland Perry or any authoritative biography of Monash.
He respected humanity and was himself human – those traits were well presented in the documentary.

Thanks Peter, I found him rather obnoxious when attending a book release sometime ago and if I hadn’t had someone with me whom I may have embarrassed and he wasn’t surrounded by others I would’ve approached him.
With all due respect to his unrecognised ancestors who fought in the same war, same my feelings were ,listening to the the docummentary on Anzac Day he was indgenious to have written the book with the title “Monash and Me.
As far as John Monash’s personal life? There was no need to have images of him with his “mistress” sitting together enjoying good for and wine whilst his men were on the battle field and they were his exact words if you can locate the docummtary.
And as for Tim Fischer….
As a Catholic, he knew darned well adultery or unfaithfulness especially back in those days had the dynamics of a cad and lacking ethics and there was no need on his behalf to bring it up more or less with tongue in cheek.
God forbid with all the adultery within the Catholic Church by clergy….
I need to correct the channel of the series referred to, it was the ABC series 2. Monash and Me. And while I’m about it, there was a battle Peter Greste referred to attributed to John Monash he was setting records straight that was connected to his great uncles if I remember correctly.
And the book launch I mentioned that I didn’t think was fair, was the mentioning of journalists Bean and Murdoch and their views on Monash without touching on their ant-Semitism.
John Monash was quietly aware of their attitude and when they opposed the appointment of commander of the Australia Corp, it is recorded he wrote to Billy Hughes prime minister of the day…”I have been made aware there is a body of opinion in London led by Keith Murdoch””…
Further more I reiterate, it was totally unnecessary for Tim Fischer, [irrespective of his plaudits appearing the opposite] to mention when interviewing Dame Elizabeth Murdoch, she bent across him and whispered “he had a mistress you know”….
I wonder if this commemoration has any connection as to the reasons why Peter Greste decided to write and launch the Monash and Me series in an attempt to undermine him by stealth.
Also, on another issue, like Tim Fischer, certain platitutes were deflected by pointing out John Monash’s “private life” and the rule of thumb associated with was totaly unnecessary.
