Perhaps Shavit's success over the years, and his 'reputation', have wrought changes in him that not only allow him to write this unfortunate chapter, but motivate him to do so. What other explanation can there be? If he cares more for celebrated and good international reputation than he does for his writing, then his writing will diminish. That's the end product of lack of honesty and sincerity. If on reading the narrative a chapter or piece stands out for its 'clunkiness', its sense of not belonging, that rings warning bells, indicating something is wrong - pity he and his editors didn't pick up on that.
It's more than a shame that he's gone down this path.
