A surprise award for Matt

Sydneysider Matt Levy has been named the best male athlete among the world’s Jewish athletes competing in the 20th Maccabiah Games.

When Levy was awarded an OAM for his swimming performances at the Paralympics he told J-Wire his grandparents who had survived the Holocaust were over the moon.

And now a new award will await him on his return to Australia form Israel.

In the 200m freestyle S7 category on Monday at Wingate, Levy became the first man to ever break a world record on Israeli soil

Other medals won included the 50m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 200m individual medley and the 50m freestyle.

In all, Levy won not only won FIVE gold medals in swimming, . His honour was announced at the Closing Ceremony.

    It is fitting that Matt was awarded the Male Athlete of the Games , as no other Jewish Athlete has ever broken a world record at Maccabiah , or indeed on Israeli soil.
    Just as importantly he is a real mensch , gets on with his training without complaint & is very humble regarding his achievements in his life .
    He is competing at the forthcoming World Swimming Championships in a few weeks time , & we should all be proud & support him to again do his very best.
