President Stephen Goodman said: “This cemetery is testament to the intertwined history and shared values of New Zealand and Israel.

This bond will be honoured later this year during the 100 year anniversary of the legendary battle for Beersheba, in which the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade played a significant part.

Many New Zealanders have visited these graves to pay their respects to the young men who made the ultimate sacrifice to defeat the Ottoman Empire, and paved the way for the establishment of the Jewish State.

Unfortunately the New Zealand Jewish community understands the pain that such desecrations of graves cause. We offer our assistance in restoring the cemetery.”
