The Zionist Council of NSW has held its annual Yom Hazikaron Ceremony to honour the memory of Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terror.

Addressing the crowd at Sydney’s Moriah College, President of the Zionist Council, Richard Balkin said “23,320 soldiers and civilians have fallen in defence of the State of Israel and as victims of terror.  This scale of loss equates to almost half of the size of our community.  It is unimaginable. This past year has again seen 80 Israelis killed since this most recent wave of unrest has swept through parts of the country as once again our people are killed for no other reason than that they are Jews. That, ladies and gentlemen is why we are all here tonight – because we have not forgotten.  Like many, many thousands of Jews around the world, we will never forget them and we will always come together to remember.”
Over 500 people attended the event and were also addressed by Deputy Chief De Mission Anat Sultan-Dadon from the Israeli Embassy in Canberra.  Israeli Advocate Omer Levi urged people to remember those we have lost but to also celebrate Yom Haatzmaut as a triumph of the Jewish people.
