Organised by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, survivors will speaking about their experiences during and after the Holocaust and for the first time, grandchildren of survivors will share how their grandparents’ experiences have impacted their lives. Child survivors Paul Drexler and best-selling author Diane Armstrong will be two of the speakers.

A Memorial Service and Name Reading ceremony will take place on Sunday morning 8 April at The Martyrs’ Memorial, Rookwood Cemetery. Journalist Fiona Harari will be the guest speaker at the Rookwood ceremony. Having worked for newspapers, magazines, television and radio, Harari recently published ‘We Are Here: Talking with Australia’s oldest Holocaust Survivors’ – a book which chronicles the lives and experiences of 18 survivors.

“With every passing year taking us further away from the Holocaust, it is that much more important to take a moment out of our busy lives and reflect on this darkest of chapters of human history,” said Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff. “The emphasis this year is on how the thousands of survivors who made a home in Australia rebuilt their lives in an extraordinary demonstration of courage and strength. We urge everyone to attend at least one of the commemorative events.”
