At a media conference in Sydney this morning, police distributed images and details of a woman and a car which they believe were involved in the 1982 bombing of the Hakoah Club.

These people are being sought by the the police. The sketches are 30 years old

Detective Chief Superintendent Wayne Gordon, one of the team leaders of Operation Forbearance, announced that the investigation had extended for the first time to Israel.

He said: “We are working with the authorities in Israel.  We are working with the Jewish community and advising some of the leaders on a regular basis as to the operational information that is appropriate.” He added that keeping all relative communities informed was normal procedure.

He said that the investigation had progressed and that the jigsaw and the pieces of it are starting to come together”.

The Valiant

The cylinders

The police were reporting on developments made since the last media conference in August this year. The investigation is being carried out jointly by the New South Wales Police Force, the Australian Federal Police, the NSW Crime Commission and ASIO.

The ongoing investigation is focused on the December 1982 of the Israeli Consulate. On the same day, December 23, a vehicle was driven to and parked in the basement car park of the Hakoah Club in Bondi. It was carrying an explosive device which detonated causing severe damage. The devices are believed two be two gas cylinders which had been the property of the State Rail Authority at that time.

DCS Gordon said a green Ford Falcon sedan was stolen in Kogarah three days earlier and was located in Greenacre burned out with a number plate missing. On December 14, two men visited a car yard in Burwood where they purchased a green Valiant sedan. On December 22, a woman, whom police are now seeking, paid the balance and drove off in the Valiant. The woman allegedly was seen shortly afterwards speaking to an occupant of a silver Mitsubishi station wagon near the car yard. The Valiant was the vehicle used at the Hakoah Club.

Police are seeking information about the “female and the two males”.

J-Wire asked DCS Gordon of technical enhancements currently available could be used to enhance the identikit images showing how the three persons sought might look today. He said that this was underway. He admitted that the investigation had extended to Israel but would not elaborate on the specific issues being dealt with there.

He added: “We are applying modern technology and techniques to a historic crime and we are progressing confidently.”

Michael Drury is a former Detective Inspector. He is currently the Director, Ethical Standards and Customer Service, with Railcorp and is assisting Operation Forbearance on the issue of the gas cylinders used in the Hakoah attack. He told media that the cylinders were used to power baggage trolleys used at Central Railway Station at the time of the bombings.

Can’t wait another thirty years to find out that a certain white puddle pooch was also seen on a black leather lead stopping frequently at trees and posts along Blair St, Warners Ave, Old Sth Head Rd. and even Bondi Rd. at the time of the “event”, because I DO know the name of the poodle, but only shall reveal it to the Inspectors ( still) in charge in 2042…..
