Victorian country school students to visit the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation

Melbourne Hebrew Congregation (MHC) will host Year 9 and 10 rural school students who are taking part in an essay contest dealing with military personnel.

Students will read their winning essays – which outline the research they have done on military personnel.

VAJEX70The public is also invited to pre-register the names of military personnel  – friends or family  – who gave their lives in WWI and then to come forward on the evening to proclaim those names.

The MHC has strong links to Australia’s history, claiming two Governors General as former members – Sir Isaac Isaacs and Sir Zelman Cowen as well as a close affiliation with Sir John Monash.
The event will include:
•  the reading of two essays and greetings from country communities
•  the VAJEX President Dr Judy Landau reciting The Ode

•  the local community announcing the names of relations and family friends who gave their lives in WWI

• singing of the New Zealand and Australian national anthems

Major General Jeffrey Rosenfeld, a direct descendant of Sir John Monash, will deliver the keynote address, focusing on the meaning of this milestone.

The event will take place on April 23.
