Approved in a 151-6 vote with nine abstentions, the General Assembly resolution stated that “any actions taken by Israel, the occupying Power, to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the Holy City of Jerusalem are illegal and therefore null and void and have no validity whatsoever.”

The resolution was similar to previous Jerusalem-related measures passed in recent years by the U.N. cultural body UNESCO, which omitted the name “Temple Mount” and only used the Muslim term for the holy site, “Haram al-Sharif.”

The six countries that voted against Thursday’s resolution were Canada, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, the U.S. and Israel. The nine countries that abstained were Australia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Honduras, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, South Sudan and Togo.

In addition to the Jerusalem measure, the General Assembly passed a resolution condemning Israel’s control over the Golan Heights, calling the area Syrian territory and stating that Israeli “occupation” is a “a stumbling block in the way of achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region,” despite the six-year-long civil war raging in Syria.

Further, the General Assembly passed a resolution calling on the U.N. to observe “International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People” annually on Nov. 29—the anniversary of U.N. Resolution 181, which called for the creation of a Jewish state in British Mandatory Palestine.

Other anti-Israel measures passed Thursday included resolutions titled “Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People,” “Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine” and “Special information program on the question of Palestine of the Department of Public Information of the Secretariat.”

U.N. bodies have adopted 18 resolutions against Israel so far this year.

In condemning Thursday’s resolutions, Israel’s General Assembly delegate noted that the U.N. continues to “annually adopt biased resolutions and devote precious resources—almost $6.5 million of its budget—to politicized bodies whose sole purpose [is] to attack and denounce Israel.”

I’M ASHAMED TO CALL MYSELF AUSTRALIAN. Why did Australia abstain? So much for the NEW Jewish member.

  2. Henry Herzog says:

Next thing you know, the UN will pass a resolution saying that Jews only pretend to be Jewish, and therefore, Jews don’t actually exist.

    • Leon Poddebsky says:

There is no irony in the fact that a Nazi, Kurt Waldheim, was a head of the UN Organisation.
There is no irony in the fact that a UN head, U Thant, triggered a war, the Six-Day War.
There is no irony in the fact that another UN head, Kofi Annan, declared that diplomacy backed by force is better than diplomacy alone.
No irony because that is the essence of the UN Organisation.

  3. Erica Edelman says:

Disgraceful situation. Disgraceful because the UN AND all
It’s agencies are STACKED with Arab states and nations
Hell-bent on destroying Israel. Disgraceful that The plight
Of the Palestinians is destined to have a hopeless sequalelae simply
Because Hamas and the PLO is running the game and
As Hezbollah are calling the shots I should imagine a day
Of SOLIDARITY is a great thing! To remind the world of terrorist
Organizations like HAMAS, PLO, Hezbollah and a measure of
Others which CONTINUE to suffocate the ppl of the West Bank
And Gaza. It’s NOT ISRAEL who should be punished but the myopic, uneducated, unsophisticated,
Uncivilised Terror-spreading members of the UN who are allowing and encouraging these groups to prosper and thrive!
    The UN MUST BE STOPPED!

  4. Adrian Jackson says:

So about 62 Commonwealth countries voted for the resolution, including the United Kingdom and New Zealand but only Canada voted against it with Australia and Papua New Guinea abstaining.
