The Other Son

THE OTHER SON tells of two teenage boys – one Israeli and one Palestinian – who discover they were swapped at birth when their mothers were evacuated during a missile strike on Haifa during the Gulf War.

A deeply humanist story, the film ask questions about how we understand identity and the sense of ‘the other’.

Reviews from the film’s US release have been very positive, for example:

“A moving, intimate family drama filled with terrific performances.” THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

“A graceful and touching story … propelled by a hopeful, good-hearted humanism.” NEW YORK TIMES

The film was shot on location in Palestine and Israel, with film crews from both communities, and also France. French is the common language of the film.

The story begins when Joseph, preparing to join the Israeli army for his national service, has a blood test that proves he is not his parents’ biological son. An investigation reveals he was inadvertently switched at birth with Yacine, the son of a Palestinian family from the West Bank. The resulting confusion and subsequent revelation 17 years later turns the lives of the two families upside-down. Joseph is the son of privilege and a wealthy French-Jewish family, his father a colonel in the IDF. Studying to be a doctor, Yacine has recently returned from Paris, where he discovers the family and world he left is no longer the same. A touching deeply personal family drama, the filmmakers have steered clear of sentimentality or melodrama as each character is forced to reassess their respective identities, their values and their beliefs.

There will be a special preview screening of THE OTHER SON at 11am on Sunday April 14 at Hoyts Cinema Paris, at the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park (Fox Studios) and we would like to offer you 20 tickets to the screening.
