Refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia have many difficulties to overcome but there is progress on one issue.

A NSW Government initiative, championed by the Sydney Alliance of community groups and other not-for-profit organisations, has allowed some newcomers to take TAFE courses free from fees.

Tonight, tribute will be made to the people who helped win the change as supporters from across the community and recipients will join Deputy Premier John Barilaro to celebrate this opportunity.

“We were talking to people who had sought refuge and almost every single person said that education is their greatest desire.   They wanted to study, to work and to contribute to Australia.

“We helped spread the word to local communities and to the Minister. He listened and as a result, some refugees and asylum seekers are getting an education” said campaign co-chair Ruth Cohen.
