Sydney young adults fly high as Australia celebrates Yom Ha’azmaut
Hagshama, Network, ZCNSW, JCA, Hillel, UPJ, UIAYL, Studio Central, Artza, Shorething and MASA have celebrated in Sydney the 65th anniversary of the state of Israel.
The Sydney young adult community once again unified in celebration, the theme was El-Al with all the young adult leaders dressed as stewards handing out sick bags filled with lollies, eye masks and flight pillows. ‘in-flight entertainment’ included Israeli DJ’s, complimentary beverages and blue and white airy fairy floss. Over 350 attended the event with a large Israeli turnout, “A night filled with friends fun and laughter, a truly memorable evening”, Elina Notkin. • Melbourne: A sell-out crowd of 800 sang, listened and hooted during the annual Yom Ha’atzmaut community concert on 15 April, while about 1500 danced, played, ate and celebrated at the family festival on 16 April. During the day on 16 April, Israeli flags flew at Fed Square, the southern entrance to the city, in honour of Israeli Independence Day, and a short film about Israel looped on the big screen in Fed Square. Hundreds of thousands of workers, tourists and city residents walk through, drive past and visit Federation Square and Flinders Street Station, which is across the road from where the flags hanged. • Sydney: More than 600 participated in the Walk with Israel, and 1200 attended the carnival celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut, during the day on 14 April. More than 600 attended the community concert on 15 April. The Zionist Council of New South Wales organised these events.
• Perth: More than 500 attended their street carnival, which included buskers, live entertainment, food and drinks on sale, and Israeli dance by Carmel PS dancers. The State Zionist Council of Western Australia organised the carnival.
• Communities in Adelaide and Brisbane and planning to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut on Sunday, 21 April, with carnivals. Brisbane is scheduled to have fireworks and camel rides. The respective state Zionist Councils in each state are overseeing the organising of those events. A community event for Yom Ha’atzmaut in Canberra is TBC.
